Lady Cats Played in the Caprock Classic Tournament in Lubbock

In a great showing, Sam Newton scored 20 points, but this was not enough as Hawley fell to Lubbock Titans 60-31 on Tuesday in the opening round of the Fibermax Caprock Classic in Lubbock. Newton was the leader of Lady Cats offense with 20 points, including eight during the second period. She also contributed seven rebounds, one steal and one block. Also helping the effort for Hawley were Kyrah Bailey (4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals), Ally Brewer (3 points, 3 rebounds), Cecylee Hicks (2 points, 1 rebound), and Cassidy Meyer(2 points, 1 rebound). Hawley finished the game with 34 rebounds (14 offensive / 20 defensive), one block and three steals. The Titans finished the Tournament as the Runner-up losing to Brownfield in the Championship game.

Hawley won against Floydada on Wednesday (47-45) with the help of Sam Newton, who scored 17 points. A 16-point second quarter helped the Hawley Lady Cats to pull ahead early on the heels of an 11-2 run. By halftime, the Lady Cats claimed a 29-20 lead. Newton led the charge for Hawley's offense, scoring 17 points, with eight points during the second period. She also contributed eight rebounds and four steals. Makayla Easley tapped out at double digits, scoring 16 points for Hawley (6-for-12). Also contributing for Hawley were Cassidy Meyer (6 points, 2 rebounds), Kyrah Bailey (6 points, 4 rebounds), and Hadlee Hicks (2 points, 3 rebounds). Easley was a big defensive contributor as well, racking up 17 rebounds and two steals. Hawley finished the game with 48 rebounds (28 offensive / 20 defensive) and eight steals.


Hawley fell to Grady 59-42 in the Consolation game to close out the tournament on Thursday. The Lady Cats finished the first half strong, scoring a game-high 16 points during the second quarter on the strength of a 9-2 run. Newton led the charge for Hawley's offense, scoring 18 points, with eight points during the fourth period. She also contributed nine rebounds and four steals. Also chipping in for Hawley were Cecylee Hicks (7 points, 6 rebounds), Cassidy Meyer(6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals), Makayla Easley (5 points, 7 rebounds), Kyrah Bailey (4 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal), and Ally Brewer (2 points, 4 rebounds). Hawley finished the game with 46 rebounds (15 offensive / 31 defensive) and eight steals.

    That tournament should have never taken place, I have never seen such a blanton disregard for the safety for all those girls, coaches and fans. After being asked to postpone or reschedule they were told no way. The snow storm was so bab the city of Lubbock could not even clear their streets. The directors of High School athletics should be held respondable got the safety of all athletics wheather boy or girl.
