Hawley has a new guy in town. His name is Jimmy Burns and he is settling into his position as superintendent of Hawley Independent School District.
Burns grew up in Hereford and graduated from high school there. West Texas State at Canyon was next and then he achieved a Masters in Education from Lamar University. He started his teaching career at Tahoka teaching history and coaching basketball, football, and track. He then furthered his teaching career moving to Floydada for 3 years, Plainview for 4 years, Abernathy for 8 years, and Vernon for 4 years.
Burns took on his first administration job at Dimmit where he was principal for 3 years. Hawley is his first school district to serve as the Superintendent.
He has been married to Dalene for 39 years and they have 4 grown children together, Randy, Mary, Jackie, and Jason. They also have 11 grandchildren. He says he is really excited about settling into his position at Hawley. He was very impressed with the school’s Staar test scores, their academics program, and the success that the academics program has had in the last few years. He also says that this size of school is the size he likes to be at. His first focus in his new position is creating a vision and setting goals for the district. In his spare time he loves to fly fish and camp.
