Swenson to be Inducted into Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame

Phil Swenson, a graduate of Avoca High School and McMurry University, is one of thirteen 2015 inductees into the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame. Swenson coached high school girls basketball and track throughout West Texas, including Hamlin, for 36 years. His teams won two state titles in track and 447 games in basketball with numerous district and regional titles in both sports. He and his wife, Jill, currently live in Stamford.

Other honorees are Colt McCoy, James Blackwood, Leanne Scott, Tom Stanton, and the late Jim Taylor. The Legacy Award will be presented to the Frank Payne family of Breckenridge, and Lew Jenkins and Faye Langford are the Legend honorees.

The Hall of Fame banquet is scheduled for May 4 at Abilene Civic Center. Banquet tickets can be purchased through www.bigcountryhalloffame.org. Tickets are $50 each or $750 for a table of 10.

    i remember my dad, JD Hargrove coaching Phil in high school basketball at Avoca. He was impressive as a player. Congratulations Phil!
