Keeping Stamford Golden: Stamford Insurance Celebrates 50 Years

By Will McClure

In 1964, Norris and Nancy Russell opened the Stamford Insurance Agency, offering auto insurance policies to Stamford citizens for personal usage. Now 50 years later, the Murphrees are continuing the tradition and have continued to grow the company, serving Stamford as well as many other areas with policies ranging from home, auto, business and farm and ranch, with the latter composing the bulk of the policies covered.

Beginning in a year where the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, Lyndon Johnson was president and a new car cost only $3,000, Stamford Insurance Agency has always maintained wise management and excellent customer service over the years, moving into a strong direction from the Russells to the Murphrees who took over in 1987, with their son Josh joining the business in 2002. The growth began with the Russells from strictly personal auto insurance policies to including homes as well to eventually maintaining commercial policies, which comprise 75% of the business and allows the agency to do business with over 50 companies. While the agency is based in Stamford, it services many other areas of the region with their options of policies.

“We kind of consider ourselves more of a regional agency, not just necessarily a local agency. We’re spread out into Oklahoma and New Mexico. We’ve grown it to something that was small into something fairly large,” Randy Murphree said. Murphree also credits technology for helping them grow and expand over the years from being the first in Stamford to have a fax machine to being able to accommodate quotes and policies through text messaging and the internet. Josh Murphree stated that another factor in the agency’s success is being able to act as a consultant for farmers and ranchers.

“We talk about coverages and what’s important here. It’s amazing what we’ve picked up. Say a farmer is worth $10 million and he has state minimum limits on his auto. It’s like you could lose all of this in one wreck. So, counseling is very important,” Josh Murphree said.

The Murphrees are also happy to see the return of Kevin Corzine to Stamford to help in the agency as well as the opening of a satellite office in Snyder to help service their regional customers. The Stamford Insurance Agency will continue to stay on the cutting edge of technology and maintain their long-distance relationships with clients as well as their local ones right here in Stamford. The agency says that they are humbled and want to let all of their customers know how much they appreciate their business and look forward to the next 50 years. And from how things are being planned for the next generation, the Stamford Insurance Agency will have no problems achieving that goal. The amazing staff invites anyone to come see them for their insurance needs. Congratulations to the Stamford Insurance Agency for 50 amazing years and their continued growth and hard work for the people of Stamford as well as the entire region. Good luck to you and keep up the great work!
