Dr. Rebecca Carter Now Seeing Patients at Stamford Health Clinic

There is a new face in Stamford as Dr. Rebecca Carter, M.D. began seeing patients at Stamford Health Clinic last week. Dr. Carter comes to Stamford from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas where she has been working in the emergency room for the past 22 years. She is board certified in emergency medicine and fluent in Spanish.

In September, Dr. Carter received a phone call from her sister-in-law, Nancy Griffith. Nancy, a member of the Stamford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, shared with Dr. Carter that Stamford was in need of a physician.

Nancy’s call came at a time when Dr. Carter was trying to decide on her next step in life. Her beloved husband of 48 years, Jerry, had recently passed away and her family was urging her to move closer to the Abilene area. She and Jerry had already purchased his family’s farm outside of Hawley with the hope of moving back home one day. After a phone conversation with Stamford Healthcare System CEO, Rick DeFoore, and a visit to Stamford, Dr. Carter decided to make Stamford her next step.

Dr. Carter is a native of the Abilene area and graduated from Abilene High School where she and Jerry were high school sweethearts. She graduated from Texas Tech University with a major in microbiology. She later studied at the Universidad Autonoma De Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico and earned her Doctor of Medicine from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in Amarillo, Texas in 1989. She completed her residency in family practice at the Washington Hospital Family Practice Residency Program in Washington, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Carter has two grown children, Wade and Jeri Anne, and one grandson, Seth. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, being outdoors and spending time with family. She has a large extended family including 32 first cousins, many who live in the Abilene area.

“I am just so glad Nancy called me,” said Dr. Carter. “I am thankful to be here and look forward to getting to know and care for the community of Stamford.”

“I am pleased that Dr. Carter is here,” said Dr. Leon Joplin, Stamford Health Clinic Medical Director and Chief of Staff at Stamford Memorial Hospital. “She is a very personable person who is a highly skilled physician. I believe she will be a strong asset for our community.”

“We are happy to welcome Dr. Carter to Stamford,” said Rick DeFoore. “We would also like to say a special thank you to Nancy Griffith for encouraging her to contact the hospital.”

Dr. Carter is accepting new patients and is currently working Monday through Friday at Stamford Health Clinic. She also plans to work intermittently in the Stamford Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. To make an appointment, please call 325-773-5733.
