With flu season just around the corner, Stamford Healthcare System has announced that the flu vaccine has arrived and is now available to the public. Flu shots will be available at the Stamford Walk-in Clinic inside Stamford Memorial Hospital on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM during the weeks of October 20th and October 27th on a walk-in basis. No co-pay is required for patients with Medicare or Medicaid. The cost is $20 for all other plans or those with no insurance.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that people receive their flu vaccine as soon as the vaccine becomes available in their community. Vaccination before December is best since the timing ensures that protective antibodies are in place before flu activity is typically at its highest. This year, Stamford Memorial Hospital is providing a quadrivalent influenza vaccine which means it will help protect against four types of influenza viruses. It cannot prevent all cases of flu, but it is the best defense against the disease.
In addition to getting vaccinated, it is important to take everyday preventive actions like staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to help prevent spreading flu to others.
The flu shot is approved for people six months of age or older who do not have a contraindication to the vaccine.
