Walmart announced plans for a new store at 1608 N Swenson St., creating a new option for residents seeking access to fresh food, affordable goods and jobs. The Stamford store is expected to open in the fall of this year.
“Walmart is excited for the opportunity to expand its service to the people of Stamford,” Walmart Regional General Manager Dacona Smith said. “We are thankful for the vision and assistance of Mayor Johnny Anders and the City of Stamford, who have worked with our team, to bring the residents of Stamford expanded opportunity to save money so they can live better.”
The 70,000-square-foot Stamford Walmart store will feature a full line of groceries as well as frozen foods, meat, dairy and fresh produce sections. General merchandise areas include a full-service pharmacy, apparel and accessories, sporting goods, electronics, home, lawn and garden, fine jewelry and health and beauty.
Like most new Walmart stores, the Stamford Walmart will include energy-efficient technology and environmentally friendly features to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste. The store will have a day lighting monitoring system in the grocery area. This system automatically and continuously dims all the lights as the daylight contribution increases.
The new store will be equipped with a water-cooled air handling unit serving the sales floor with state-of-the-art technology to remove moisture and provide fresh air for healthy indoor air quality. The system allows the store to operate at a higher summer temperature, use less energy, and allows the refrigeration system to operate more efficiently.
Walmart employs more than 154,000 people at its approximately 500 locations and the average wage for regular, full-time hourly associates in Texas is $12.51 per hour. Additionally, Walmart spent $49.9 billion for merchandise and services with suppliers in Texas FY2013 alone. As a result of those relationships, the company supports an additional 157,807 supplier jobs in the state.
The Stamford Walmart recently celebrated their 25th anniversary. According to Keith Gilbreath, Assistant Manager, the site of the new Supercenter will be just north of Pate's on N. Swenson and is slated to open in the fall.
