Bailea Wilhelm, a Freshman, of Stamford FFA traveled to Houston, Texas, on March 9, 2013, to show her Dark Crossbred Barrow in the Houston Livestock Junior Market Barrow Show. There were approximately 2710 market barrows that were exhibited in the Houston Livestock Show from March 10th thru the 14th.
The road to the Champion Dark Crossbred Barrow was quite a process. Bailea and her barrow, Remi, showed in a Heavy Weight Class with 56 other barrows Sunday, March 10th, and received 1st Place honors. Later that day, Remi and Bailea went back in and showed for Heavy Weight Division Champion against the other exhibitors that were given 1st place honors in their respective classes, and were crowned Heavy Weight Division Champion Dark Crossbred Barrow. Immediately following, they showed in the Dark Crossbred Breed Champion Drive and were selected as the Champion Dark Crossbred Barrow of the Houston Livestock Show. Bailea received two trophies, a belt buckle and a banner; and with these honors earned a coveted spot with an elite group of barrows in the Champion Drive of the show at 7:30PM Thursday night. When asked how it felt to be exhibiting the Champion Dark Crossbred Barrow of the show in Houston, Bailea said, “It’s a dream come true! I never thought I would be in this position and it’s a great place to be. It has been a once in a lifetime opportunity and a week I’ll never forget. We are just blessed to have had the opportunity to be in the ring with such an awesome group.”
The premium sale was on Friday, March 15th, and Remi brought $26,000. When asked what she was going to do with the money, Bailea said, “I’m going to put it up and put it towards my college one day.” Bailea would like to thank her Ag teacher, Brad Bevel, for all of his help. She stated, “None of this would have been possible without Mr. Bevel. He’s the best!” Also, a big thank you to Jett Mason for his help in Houston and the rest of Stamford FFA show team who helped throughout the week and stayed to support her during the Champion Drive on Thursday night!
