Cobb Awarded Prestigious French Award

On November 14th Stamford resident Clif Cobb was awarded the Medal of Knight in the French Order of the Legion of Honor in recognition of his contribution to the liberation of France during World War II.

This medal was presented on behalf of the French Government at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio and about 20 other individuals received the award along with Cobb. The Legion of Honor was created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 to award eminent merits in the service of France. The purpose was to award French Citizens and foreign nationals whether military or civilian. It is the highest French decoration and is similar to the US Medal of Honor, the highest decoration for military actions, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest decoration for civilian contributions.

Cobb served in France starting on July 15, 1944 when he arrived on Omaha Beach, Normandy. He served in the 436th Medical Battalion, US First Army. He was then assigned to General George Patton’s Third Army where he participated in the “St. Lo Breakout” and helped to secure the Brest Peninsula. He then headed east with the Third Army participating in the battle of Falaise and the liberation of Paris. He also participated in the Battle of Bulge and received a battlefield commission being promoted to 2nd Lieutenant under General Patton. He served a total of 2½ years active duty in Europe and 1½ years active duty in Korea during the Korean War plus 16 years in the Army Reserve. He retired at the rank of Major.
